1996 Jul
Opened "Soft Island", the predecessor to DLsite.
In 1996, back when the internet was still in its infancy, Japan's first doujin download shop, "Soft Island" opened! This is where DLsite's bright(?) history begins.

2002 December
Introduced free copy protection service
This system to protect the works circles put into our care was introduced 19 years ago.

2004 Feb
Began English language service
Around this time we started to get approached by people from overseas. These days, overseas users are about 10% of our user base!

2005 Feb
Began handling commercial games
In addition to doujin games, we began the download sale of commercial games. There may have been an issue or two on the day this service began... For details check the "dark past".

2005 December
First Comic Market appearance as a company
This was the first time we participated in Comic Market, one of the world's biggest doujin retail events. We've continued to sell original goods and give out novelty items there ever since.

2006 Aug
Began handling women's doujin works
It was 15 years ago that the retail section now known as DLsite Garumani was first created. At the time it was called "DLsite Hanamaru" and sold doujin works aimed at women.

2008 Apr
Began handling commercial e-books
This was the time when the three pillars of the current DLsite - doujin games, commercial games and commercial e-books - were finally aligned.

2010 Jun
Held the first "Digital Doujin Creators"
We even held a digital-doujin-only offline event. Programs included illustrators doing real-time drawing, and everyone had a good time.

2015 Apr
Launched DLsite Play
Users could now enjoy easy access to their e-books, CG sets, audio and video works in their browsers.

2019 Jan
DLsite TV commercial broadcast
To coincide with the broadcast, we also released a free audio work starring Kana Asami and Emiri Katō. The popular cosplayer Enako lent her talents to the commercial.

2020 May
Held a DLsite Air Comiket event
Activities included an illustration collection with the theme "Ganbarou Doujin", meant to help support the industry, and the download sale of the Comic Market 98 Catalogue.
All proceeds from the illustration collection, after the deduction of payment fees, went to creators, sales event organisers and printing companies. -
2021 Oct
DLsite account registrations topped 7 million
Thanks to all of our lovely users, DLsite and its related services topped 7 million account registrations! With over 54,000 circles and 440,000 works, even as we reach 25 years of service, we're still growing. We're going to keep working to improve our services to make a better space for both our users and our creators.

You had to provide a real name and address!?
When DLsite's previous incarnation "Soft Island" first opened, user registration required a real name and address. Of course, registration information was kept strictly confidential, but the idea that your personal preferences could be linked to this kind of personal information is unthinkable in this day and age.

会員登録時の住所と本名をもとに、はがきでのDMをお送りしたことも。一見何の変哲もない圧着はがき、しかし開くと悩まし気な表情の女の子たちが…というDMだったため、ユーザーさんご本人ではなくご家族が開いてしまうと大変なことに!?

The Blind Drunk incident
There was an error with a site renovation that caused the site to come down. During the downtime, the CEO at the time sent an apology email to users, but in it was a typo that translates to "I'm getting blind drunk trying to fix this", which ended up going viral.

Launched all-you-can-read subscription service "Premium100"
We had a subscription service that let you read 100 titles for 2,700 Yen a month as far back as 17 years ago. The titles changed each month, with staff choosing the selections each time. Perhaps we launched this service too soon.

The reason releases were delayed on the day we started selling commercial games...
On the day we started handling commercial games, the project leader slept in and was late for work! The release times were delayed from the original plan, and all he could do was apologise to the developers.

DLsite appeared on Konya mo Hustle
DLsite staff members appeared as regulars on "Konya mo Hustle" ("Let's Hustle Again Tonight"), a risque late-night show on Sun Television. They hosted a segment showcasing H games, though because of the nature of the show, they maybe didn't take the segment too seriously...

Suspected April Fool's hacking!?
As an April Fool's joke, a staff-made poorly-drawn illustration was used as the site mascot, appearing at the top of the page. However, there were also some issues with access on that day, leading some users to suspect that our site had been hacked.

Opened DLsite VR Store
In 2016, which was called the first year of the VR era, we opened a page specializing in VR works. However, as with Premium100, it's possible the idea was ahead of its time, so the service was later quietly closed...

Launched DLsite Rental
We started a service allowing users to rent PC Games entirely online. Though the period users could play for was pre-set, it allowed them to play at an affordable price. Download cards with rental codes printed on them were also sold at GEO stores.
