主人公の探偵が、男としても、女としても、とても艶めかしく描かれています。運命に抗う姿も、理性を切り崩されて官能に溺れていくさまも、表情の一つ一つが可憐で凛々しい。結末も主人公のその後がどうなるか空想を掻き立てて、良い意味で読み手にとって生殺しのような、しかし美事な幕引きとなっています。
